I've said it before and I'll say it again. A child cannot have enough books - especially in this day and age. I am a huge believer in the power of reading (that is not to say I don't enjoy my TV shows)! Books feed the imagination and our own learning system.

This is a good time to introduce you to someone who is very knowledgeable in the arena of how the media affects our kids. His name is Dr. David Walsh from MediaWise. What does this have to do with a posting on books, you ask? The media is taking over our children's ability to read as well as their desire to read. Reading is fundamental, essential, and powerful. In fact, their Television's Effect On Reading And Academic Achievement section shares some eye-opening facts. Here are just a few:

• American children, ages 2-17, watch television on average almost 25 hours per week or 3 ½ hours a day. Almost one in five watch more than 35 hours of TV each week (Gentile & Walsh, 2002).
• Children spend more time watching television than any other activity except sleeping.
• Children achieve more success in early reading skills if they have experience with books and other print media, and were read to as preschoolers.

MediaWise does not bash the use of TV. They acknowledge TV is here to stay and share with us ways to control the use of TV. TV is just one media medium. MediaWise also has a ton of research and information on video games, internet/computer use, and music. You will find amazing, and at times startling, facts and research. However, the site is also filled with great tips and information for parents.

After the holidays, I will share some insights from the website on video games. I think you will find it quite interesting.

My Kids Don't Need a Nicer Computer Than Me

I sincerely apologize for my absence this last week - especially at a time when you need gift ideas! We purchased a new computer "for the kids". Once we received it, I decided I would have a go at it and give the kids my "old" computer. I'm one who believes my 7 year old and 4 year old don't need a nicer computer than me.

Anyone who has ever purchased another computer knows what it is like to reinstall all your programs/software on to the new computer all over again and then burn your Word, Excel, Powerpoint (whatever) files - not to mention all your music files - to many CDs or flash drives and then reinstall them onto the new computer. Time consuming and quite frankly a huge pain in the butt. But again, my kids don't need a nicer computer than me.

(By the way, if you have a Mac, you can skip this post... unless you would like a good laugh!)

Here is where my amazing find comes in to play. My wish for you this holiday season is that you will benefit from my pain and discovery! Well, I did the entire process of reinstalling my programs on the new computer. However, I did hear about this Easy Transfer Cable. If your "old" computer runs Windows XP and your new computer runs Windows Vista, you are in luck - major luck. This handy dandy cable transfers all your files/documents from Word, Excel, etc., your music, and even your email. Yes, I said email! So, I bought the $40 Easy Transfer Cable and software (from Best Buy). I transferred all my files only to find out that there was some bug with my Outlook and I had error messages (on the new computer).

For two days, I tried everything I could think of and every sane thing I could find on Google to fix the problem. I think I can now apply for a job with the Geek Squad. I can't tell you how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled my Office software. I can't tell you how many file paths I followed and deleted this and that. I even went into the registry keys (a no, no for novices, but remember I think I could apply for a job with the Geek Squad at this point). Tedious proceedures. Then just as I thought I had it all figured out and I was going to try transferring my Outlook files using the Easy Transfer Cable for the last time, the cable just stopped working. Typical, right? Try telling this to me at midnight. You could say I was about to go crazy. But again, my kids don't need a nicer computer than me.

Once again, to Google I go for answers on why this Easy Transfer Cable simply stopped working. In my research, I find something called the Easy Transfer Companion. Hold onto your socks people, here comes my amazing find. The Easy Transfer Companion transfers/copies your programs. Your Office suite, your Adobe products, etc. (There are a few things it won't transfer, like your Internet Security, things you have a paid subscription for.) In conjunction with the Easy Transfer Cable, these two devices can save you literally hours, if not days, of transferring/copying programs, files, music, and email from one computer to the other. Remember I had already reinstalled all of my programs, so I was only able to use this feature for Office. So, I hope my discovery is your gain. It worked. Slick.

And that my friends, is what I've been doing for a week. Not to mention a little (very little) Christmas shopping. Boring, I know, but I tackled it and figured it out.

The story does go on.
I was so proud for figuring this out all by myself. Once I uninstalled the Easy Transfer Cable software and reinstalled it, that worked just fine. However, a couple hours later I contacted Norton to install my paid subscription for internet security on to the new computer. I won't bore you with the details, but holy man, I still don't have it all fixed. More problems, but not major.

So, I ask you? Should I really have gotten on my high horse and insisted that my kids don't really need a better computer than me?

YES! Even after all that. I'm sticking to it.

For the Musically Inclined

Many people have an ear for music. I am not one of them. I love music, but I literally faked my way through playing the french horn in 7th grade band class (at least I thought I did, I'm sure the teacher knew I had no idea what I was doing).

Catching Up

Hope everyone had a fun and relaxing holiday weekend! I, however, did not. From Wednesday night to Sunday afternoon, I spent my time in bed with a severe case of strep throat. Some people might say, "Oh my, relish the time alone, milk the sick time by getting waited on." Unfortunately it wasn't like that. Let's just say I was really sick and couldn't enjoy any of it. On the plus side, I did catch up on some TV shows!

I watched the two episodes of this season's Project Runway.

I also caught quite a few entertaining episodes of The Real Housewifes of Orange County. Heard of it but had never seen it. Can someone please tell Bravo to mix up their commercials? I know they are in it for the money and there is some statistical information out there that says, "Show this commercial 50 times during one show and the consumer won't forget it." The problem is, I am now completely annoyed. I get it already. Real Housewives has a new show this Tuesday night and Project Runway has a new show Wednesday night. TiVO the shows and skip the ads. As if that needs to be said anymore!

Lastly, I caught Stacy London's (from What Not To Wear) Fashionably Late premier. I think she's pretty damn funny! You can catch this one on Friday nights. For the most part, it's a witty show, but I don't think I'll be spending my Friday nights watching it... unless I'm sick.

The story below was in a forwarded email to me from a friend. I think it is worth posting! The author is not noted. So I apologize, I don't know who took the Laura Numeroff story lines and created a humorous tale for mothers.

She'll want a strong cup of coffee to go with it.
She'll make herself some.

Doodle Dice

A friend of mine told me about this one, Doodle Dice. I think I'll buy it just because it's fun to say the name! Doodle Dice. It's labeled for kids 6+, but she said her 4-1/2 year old boy is easily catching on to a slightly modified version. Players roll the 6 dice and use them to create the doodles on the playing cards. You can also block opponents and take their cards away (perfect for siblings). The first player to create a doodle from each colored deck, wins!

Spoons!

Flashback. 1986 slumber party. My house. About 1:00 am. Eight screaming girls. Why were we screaming? Well, there were lots of reasons, just ask my dad. Uh oh, another flashback, "Emily, will you be quiet down there?" And it wasn't exactly a polite question as it was a furious demand.
Back to why we were screaming. Well, as I said, there were lots of reasons, movies, funny stories, ghost stories, and spoons. Yes, spoons.

Do you remember the game? It's back! Actually, I'm not sure it ever left. I just didn't exactly play in college. Although I suppose it would have been a good twist on a drinking game. I digress.
It's a simple, yet very fun concept. You need to get four-of-a-kind. Once you do, you secretly snag a spoon. If you see a spoon is gone, they are all up for dibs and you want to get one before they are gone or you, my friend, are done. Some may say, "I don't need to buy that game. We have a deck of cards and we have spoons." But I ask you, do you really want to be washing your spoons constantly? Do yourself a favor. Slap down the $10.00 for the Giant Spoons game and save yourself the headache of not having a clean spoon the next time you dig into that Ben and Jerry's.

Hide and Seek

This one is for all ages, however there is a twist from the traditional hide and seek game. I've seen these little safari guys all over this year. It's an award winner from National Parenting Center.

Admit it. It gets a bit old to be "seeking" your 3 year old that can't stop giggling because she thinks her same hiding spot for her last 10 turns is somehow magically sneaky this time around. Yes, it is cute and funny the first hundred times, but honestly it does get old.

Bring on Hide and Seek Safari animals. Kids can play with these animals alone or use them with the other Hide & Seek animals. "The Monkey's curved tail allows him to hang upside down indoors or out. I Spy 3D

One of my sons loves I Spy books. He can't get enough of them. So, I figure this will make a great gift, I Spy 3D. You've gotta love any "board" game that comes with super fashionable cardboard glasses. By "board" game, I mean tiles. There are 40 tiles. You could place 15 down at once (see above picture). Then you slip on your nifty glasses and the "board" jumps out at you while the objects on the tiles seem to float. What's cool (besides the glasses), is the tiles will always be in different spots, so you can't necessarily remember where all the objects are - like you can in the books. My son will love it!

Sense of Touch

Think back to when you were growing up. Did you ever go to birthday parties where you had to stick your hand in a brown paper bag and feel for a certain small object? If so, I'm guessing someone we grew up with took that idea and ran with it, bringing it to modern times. The New Touch Game sold at Young Explorers is exactly that idea. Gal to Gal

It is officially the end of October and the month for Breast Cancer Awareness. However, as you know awareness shouldn't stop November 1st. The Gal to Gal Foundation recognizes this and they are continuing their efforts to raise a cool million for Stage IV breast cancer patients. I wrote about this group earlier this month. The Foundation walked - virtually - across America and today ended in San Francisco. The group is very dedicated to their goal.

As of today, it looks like they have raised just over $100,000. They have a ways to go, but with your help they will make it!

20 Days and Counting

Just a little reminder, Halloween is only 20 days away. And if you are going to order anything online, that doesn't give you much time. Plus, all the costumes are doing their annual disappearing act from the stores these days - especially in the size you need. It's time to get prepared because it's getting to be slim pickings out there.

Stage IV Breast Cancer

As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. One of the passions behind Designhergals.com is to raise money for Stage IV breast cancer patients through their Gal to Gal Foundation. This month they are hosting a special virtual walk event. You don't need to fly to a certain city to participate. All you need to do is fire up that internet connection of yours. Chances are, if you are reading this, you've accomplished that step.

Their goal is to register 1 million walkers throughout the month of October. The donation is minimal, $3.00. Of course, they will take more! I think you can live without Starbucks for one day. Make coffee from home and donate to a wonderful cause. So many women (and men) who are living with and going through the most critical phase of this incredulous disease will benefit from your generosity.

Virtually, they will be walking from Boston to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Hint: no training needed, it's virtual. Today they are in Baltimore, MD.

Stayin' Alive

I can't keep a plant alive to save my own life. Hence, you will not find any long-term greenery inside my house. And the outside? Well, my husband takes care of most of the outside chores, including the watering. However, I just may have found something to make it possible for me to put a little green inside my home. It is a self-watering flowerpot. How ingenious is this? The vase holds enough water for the plant to need watering only once a week! To know if your plant is getting thirsty, all you need to do is look at the base and see if the water is low. It couldn't be any easier than this, folks.

Now, I must admit the reservoir isn't exactly stunning. But if you want some greenery in your house or you have always wanted to grow some herbs, for once we'll have to put aside looks for functionality and practicality. You can always place something small in front of it! Or stick it in another, bigger pot.

Real green, I can feel the clean oxygen already!

Everybody Loves the Tooth Fairy

My son lost his third tooth the other day. We have a tiny silver keepsake holder lined in velvet he puts it in. The tooth fairy comes, takes the tooth, and hides money under his pillow. I won't say how much because you will judge me for either being too damn cheap or for spoiling my child too much. I think it's a cute box and found a couple like it on Amazon. I searched for tooth fairy on the internet. Let me tell you there are some pretty weird web sites out there selling crap! And get a load of this picture I found. Now that is down right freaky, and gross I might add.

This tooth fairy box is sterling silver. At $45 it makes a nice gift for your niece or nephew.

If you want something more extravagant, this tooth fairy box is also sterling silver only it's $307. What the difference is, I have no idea. Maybe the $307 one comes with teeth - dentures for the actual tooth fairy.

Another Three Martinis, Please

She did it again.
And, no, I'm not referring to Britney. That's an insult! Christie Mellor, author of The Three Martini Family Vacation has written another funny book. Once again, I am still chuckling over some of the situations she describes.

Her previous book, The Three Martini Playdate had me rolling on the floor (like Yoga) while providing my abs a nice work out from all the laughing. Have you ever heard of losing weight while reading a book? Bonus! This book is just as good. She has a way of taking everyday situations, revealing the stupidities of some parents, and trying to set them straight with some valid suggestions - all while being quite hilarious because you can picture so much of it in your mind. And you know many of "these" parents!

Laugh Over Spilled Milk

More food ends up on the floor than in Junior's mouth.

Why is that? I spend more time cleaning the floor under where my kids sit than I spend at the spa. And that is just wrong! I'm fighting back with a spill mat by Caden Lane. Laminated and large, measuring at 35" x 39", these spill mats will make any mess easy to clean. Just wipe the surface. Not to mention the super cool prints you can choose from. Depending on the shape of your floor, you just might want to keep the mat on the floor permanently!

Those nasty little messes come from everything - art projects and play dough to little Ricky looking you square in the eye with a huge grin while he dumps his yogurt on the floor. Next time, you can smile back at little Ricky and laugh. He will not only be utterly confused that you did not get angry and frantically try to clean up the mess, he will probably think, "Game over" and not try it again. Then you will secretly throw your head back, do a mad scientist laugh and think, "I've won. I've actually won."
Daydream over. Back to reality.

Make This Fall Sweeter

If you consider Fall starting when school starts, it's here. Otherwise, it's just around the corner. We must face it, another summer has flown by. However, I have to say fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Not too hot, not too cold. You are ready for a little crisp air (not arctic, just crisp). You are ready to slip those jeans back on and maybe even a comfy sweater.
